The Wood Award for Excellence is given, when deemed appropriate, by the TWBW Board of Directors. It is awarded to members of the professional media who have been outstanding in the promotion of our sport. This year's unanimous choice is Don Wright of Killeen / Ft. Hood. Don is a freelance writer who currently writes a weekly column for the Killeen Daily Herald. His work also appears regularly in the Dallas based Bowling News, the Houston based Gulf Coast Bowling News, the San Antonio based Across the Lanes and Bowl magazine. He has also been published in Bowlers Journal. Don is a retired Army Chief Warrant Officer and Vietnam veteran. He served 23 years as a special agent for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and has been an avid bowler for over 50 years. He has served as a local association officer and is a Life Memberof the Killeen/Ft. Hood Bowling Association. Don began writing about bowling after the death of former Wood Award winner Herb Gormley. Don |
approached the Killeen paper
and asked if he could take a crack at a weekly column. They assented and initially
gave him about 2 inches of space on page three of the sports section. Now, twelve
years later, bowling has the entire front page of the sports section every Wednesday.
Don and his wife G. G. who takes most of the pictures for his columns, are also both certified youth coaches. Incredibly, the Wood Award is the first that Don has ever received for his writing excellence. When informed of his award, Don stated that he was "very humbled and honored." He also went on to praise the leadership and work of TWBA and our writers‚ organization. The award namesake and sponsor is TWBW Life Member and TWBA Hall of Fame Member Millie Wood. |
