Entering to the music of Gary P. Nunn's "Ask
Me What I Like About Texas?" members of the Board of Directors introduced this
year's theme,Pioneering the New Millenium, at the Annual Breakfast Meeting held June
2 in Ft. Worth.
Attired as nineteenth century performers at "Miss Syleta's Saloon" the
women created an upbeat atmosphere for those in attendance and helped to illustrate
the importance of thinking and acting in bold new ways when taking on publicity projects.
TWBW President, Syleta Halbert, who, in her remarks, stressed the importance of recapturing
the pioneer spirit, welcomed members and guests. She pointed out that TWBW is the
oldest state writers group for women in the nation and as such has a proud tradition
to uphold. She encouraged all members of TWBW to join forces with the National Women
Bowling Writers in a continuing effort to maintain bowling as the foremost sports
organization for women in the United States.
Cheryl Ross, TWBW Secretary/Treasurer, once again favored those assembled by singing
part of her report. In keeping with her character as a star performer, she enumerated
the Acts of the Board to the "Can-Can song". It was evident from her report
that we have had a busy year.
Adna Clevenger, Ways and Means Chairman reported that sales of the bowling pin buddies
had been quite successful. To date TWBW has sold nearly 300 of the little critters.
Profits from these sales will certainly help TWBW to fulfill it's mission.
Membership Chairman, Ellen Goss noted that our membership figures are up this year
so, hopefully, we are doing a better job of communicating the importance of publicity
efforts to local associations.
Our Web Site Coordinator, Sharon Creagor, encouraged everyone to visit us on-line.
The Bowlarama site continues to receive many visitors each day and has proved to
be an excellent communication tool.
First Vice President Jeanne Hester gave an excellent report, as News and Views Chairman,
on how this year's theme relates to the goals of those involved in publicity. Our
Contest Chairman, Second Vice President Ann Powell, also presented an informative
report on the winners of the various writing contests.
A Certificate of Appreciation was awarded this year to Frank Thomas of Arlington.
Mr. Thomas, a long time bowling center employee has distinguished himself with his
unwavering support of bowlers of all ages over the course of many years. Recent health
problems prevented Mr. Thomas from attending our meeting but, in a telephone conversation
with Jeanne Hester, he expressed his gratitude.
Jeri Wines, chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the proposed slate for
election to the TWBW Board. Ann Powell and Director #4, Tiffany Saunders were unanimously
returned to their respective positions. Gail Cantu, of San Antonio, was returned
to the Board as Director #3. Fellow Board members are delighted to have these talented
women return to our ranks.
The president thanked Mary Burns, who constructed the lovely table centerpieces for
the meeting. Covered wagons, with the initials of our organization on the sides were
enhanced by Texas wildflowers. One lucky person at each table got to take one home
as a remembrance.
Board members closed the meeting with a ,high kick routine to the Pointer Sister
song "Yes, I Can".
If you ask any member or guest of TWBW, who attended the meeting, what they like
about Texas, they would probably say "Everything between the Sabine and the
Rio Grande".
